An aphrodisiac means a series of products, usually herbs and plant extracts, capable of restoring the stimulus, direct or indirect, of the sexual act.
As it often happens, one of the two members of the couple is suffering from psychological or physical disorders that can create sexual problems. Neglecting the problem may further develop into a complex disorder. But some aphrodisiacs for women and men, known and used for centuries by indigenous people, can aid these sexual problems in a natural ways due to their natural properties.
So let’s indicate the main natural aphrodisiacs.
Yohimbine
An extract that has attracted interest is the Yohimbine, which is an alkaloid contained in the bark of the Rubiaceae Corynanthe yohimbe. This alkaloid is able to stimulate sexual behavior at the central level and to produce vasodilatation in the periphery. Yohimbine is mostly used in the treatment of organic or psychosomatic impotence (Erectile Dysfunction). Unfortunately, Corynanthe Yohimbe is one of those plants which are difficult to to find, and is also considered dangerous. Alternatively, you can use a Brazilian Muira puama plant, whih is also an aphrodisiac of extraordinary power. It contains an alkaloid with a structure similar to yohimbine.
Maca
Maca is an aphrodisiac, energizing sexual function, especially in men. Maca contains some alkaloids which act on hypothalamic-pituitary axis, resulting in stimulation of the adrenal glands and energizing and stimulating effect on the gonads.
It has ability to increase fertility, both males and females, due to the synergism of several components: a high content of minerals such as zinc and iodine, the presence of amino acids, particularly arginine and vitamins C and E act in synergy with the substances of nature alcaloidea and phytosterols.
Tribulus Terrestris
Tribulus Terrestris is a natural ENERGIZING TONIC can have a positive influence on the sexual function. Being an energizing tonic, Tribulus has also properties of anabolic steroids, stimulants of sexual activity and spermatogenic function, due to the presence of steroidal saponins. Tribulus Terrestris along with Maca is definitely the most widely used aphrodisiac.
Mucuna pruriens
Mucuna pruriens. The scientific study of the active substances of this aphrodisiac has shown that the action of Mucuna is fundamentally linked to high content of L-dopa (dopamine). The dopaminergic activity is associated with the sexual function in males. According to some authors, the aphrodisiac activity of Mucuna appears to be enhanced by some indole alkaloids contained in it, in particular, the 5-methoxy-N and N-dimethyltryptamine.
Muira puama
Muira puama (Ptycopetalum olacoides) is a small tree that grows in the Amazon rainforest, and its white flowers have a fragrance similar to jasmine. It has the bark, called the “wood of power”, which has been used for problems of sexual weakness by indigenous people of the Amazon. In Europe, the first scientific studies on Muira were carried out after 1920. More recently, in 1980 the plant was the subject of clinical studies that have shown beneficial effects in increasing libido (62% positive responses) and a very positive effect on treating erectile dysfunction (51% response positive). The active ingredients are represented by plant sterols, essential oil and an alkaloid (muirapuamina).
Damiana (Turnera aphrodisiaca)
Damiana (Turnera aphrodisiaca) represents a shrub grown in Mexico, Central and South America, and already known in traditional medicine of the ancient Mayan civilization. In addition to improving sexual function and performance, Damiana acts as a general stimulant tonic and an antidepressant. It is, therefore, particularly useful in treating of impotence of psychological origin. It has the leaves whose active ingredients consist of an essential oil, bitter substances (damianina) and alkaloids, similar to testosterone by the action.

A study of an Italian university determined that moderate consumption of red wine can increase female sexual desire. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Florence, was based on testimonies of 798 Italian women 18 to 50 years in the Chianti region in Tuscany. The women were classified into three groups according to their usual daily consumption of wine: those who consumed one to two glasses of wine, those who drank less than one drink daily and teetotalers.
Those who drank more than two drinks were excluded to rule out the possibility of intoxication.
The women, all considered sexually healthy, since a questionnaire with 19 questions was designed to measure their “index of female sexual function,” a measure used in other scientific studies on the sexuality of women.
According to the responses, the group with the highest levels of desire was the women who drank one to two drinks per day.
“Key” Areas
The doctors concluded that “there is a potential link between red wine intake and better sexuality“.
One of the theories of the Italian doctors is that the chemical components of red wine may improve sexual function by increasing blood flow to the “key” areas of the body.
However, the authors of the study, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, clarify that found “no significant difference between groups with respect to the incitement, satisfaction or orgasm.”
“The result should be interpreted with caution because the sample was small,” they added.
Another striking conclusion that emerges from the study is that, although age is often associated with loss of libido, wine drinkers were, on average, older than the other two groups.
VIAGRA®, being a brand name for sildenafil citrate, a chemical which belongs to the class of PDE5 inhibitors, represents an effective treatment for male’s erectile dysfunction.
VIAGRA was approved for this condition in 1998 in the United States.
Since that time, VIAGRA became something more than just an ordinary prescription pill for a strong erection.
Off-label, VIAGRA became a drug for:
- parties
- recreation
- sports stimulation
- penis and libido enhancement
- entertainments
The list is open. The ones who played (and are playing) a crucial role in such a transformation were the media and TV, promoting VIAGRA in direct-to-consumer ads.
FAKE VIAGRA
To an average consumer nowadays, VIAGRA is considered as not a brand or a registered trademark, but just as a common drug, which helps treat sexual disorders.
Such an image was created by the generic drug makers, promoting own counterfeit drugs with the names similar to VIAGRA in early 2000s. Fake VIAGRA replicas, never approved and potentially dangerous for human’s health, could easily reach customers through the so-called online pharmacies, or ordinary web-sites with medical-related content and designs. The US Government’s efforts to battle against the fake pharmacies in the Internet came too late, and after the illegal market reached million turn-overs.
The FAKE VIAGRA NAMES are, but not limited to, the following:
Kamagra, Malegra, Yagara, Caverta, Penegra, Edegra, Lovegra, Eriacta, Silagra, ViagRX, VigRX
Additionally, there are some generic formulations (typically made in India, China and Philippines) of sildenafil citrate, which contain VIAGRA name, but still are potentially dangerous. These are:
Viagra Professional, Viagra Super Force, Viagra Plus, Viagra Super Active, Gold Viagra, Pink Viagra, Viagra Soft Tabs, Viagra Oral Jelly, Viagra Capsules
The above mentioned drugs have NEVER been properly tested or approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction or any other conditions in males, therefore using them without doctor’s consultation is dangerous for health or might lead to death.
Remember, that counterfeit drugs kill millions people each year, and the ‘fake VIAGRA’ is among those killers.
The only approved VIAGRA (by the United States Food and Drug Administration – visit: www.fda.org) is made in form of blue-colored film-coated oral tablets, marked with VGR25, VGR50 and VGR100 labels for 25, 50 and 100 milligram dosages, respectively, on one side, and with PFIZER, on the other. Three dosages of 25 milligrams, 50 milligrams and 100 milligrams are the only approved VIAGRA dosages. See the real VIAGRA pictures below.

Can medicines affect your sex life?
There are some drugs which may affect the sexual drive and potency. It is unfortunately about adverse effects. And remember that even though the drug label says that one of the possible side effects is a decreased sexual function, then it is not necessarily the side effect that hits you. Also note that sexual side effects generally disappear after you finish taking the medicine.
But it’s not only the medical treatment that could affect you. If you have an underlying disease, it can slow sexual desire and potency as well. There are also some situations in your life when you become anxious about your job, relationships, etc, so you make it more difficult to relax and enjoy the sexual life in full.
How can drugs affect sexuality?
Possible side effects may have different causes:
- Some medicines can affect the brain areas that have special importance for sexual desire.
- Medications can also have a direct effect on the genitals.
Are there differences between men and women?
Medicine is mostly studied in men, so that we know less about possible side effects that can affect women’s sexuality. Still, one can assume that sexual side effects are equally frequent in both sexes.
- Erectile dysfunction in males corresponds to having problems with vaginal dryness in women
- Problems with ejaculation in males may correspond to orgasm problems in women.
What drugs can cause sexual side effects and how?
- Blood Pressure Medications, for example, beta blockers which cause troubles with erection, decreased sexual interest, painful persistent erection.
- Digoxin: decreased sexual interest, difficulty with erection.
- Cholesterol-lowering medications: decreased sexual interest, difficulty with erection.
- Corticosteroids (cortisone): pain in the vagina during sexual intercourse.
- Female sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, or hormone substitutions): can both enhance and inhibit libido in women, as well as inhibit sexual desire and erection in men.
- Antacids (cimetidine): decreased sexual desire in both women and men, difficulty with erection.
- Antidepressants: decreased desire and problems with erection, dryness in the vagina, inhibited orgasm and ejaculation. Some antidepressant medications have fewer sexual side effects, such as MIANSERIN.
- Arthritis Medicine (general analgesic arthritis medicine): problems with erection
- Neuroleptics (anti psychotic drugs): decreased sexual desire and problems with erection. Inhibited orgasm and ejaculation. Spontaneous or painful ejaculation. Potentially painful persistent erection might occur.
- Tranquilizers for anxiety, agitation and insomnia (benzodiazepines): especially in higher doses or along with other tranquilizers can inhibit sexuality.
- Disulfiram: Any sexual problems caused by alcohol abuse are rather similar in this drug.
- Epilepsy Medication (e.g. carbamazepine): Inhibited sexual desire. Problems with erection.
- Tetracyclines (antibiotics): pain in vagina during sex
- Chemotherapy (cytotoxic): Inhibited sexual desire and function. Dryness and pain in the vagina during sex.
- Antifungal Medicine (ketoconazole, nizoral in high doses): Decreased libido and erectile problems
- Anabolic steroids: decreased sexual desire and problems with erection.
- Medicines for Parkinson’s disease (Levodopa): Can improve libido and erection. But only in people with Parkinson’s disease.
Can there be other causes for the reduced desire and potency?
Our sexuality has many facets and parts that must work together in balance. Problems with your sex life can be evoked psychosomatically. This means that external circumstances can also make your sex life not not work in a satisfying way.
Psychogenic causes
When you get psychologically sick, your whole life is affected. Your job, family relationships and your sense of your own body may become subject to revision.
This means that your sexual life is very susceptible to external factors, but it also means that by addressing these factors, you can do much to enhance your sexual experience and pleasure from sex with the partner.
If you have troubles in your sex life, try asking yourself some questions:
- Are you sure that your sexual problems are related to any disease, or there are some other things in your life that come into play?
- What do you think your current problem is? And what have you or others done to solve it?
- What do you think should be done?
- What prevents you from moving forward?
- And the last but not least one, what are your expectations from your sexual life?
Physiological causes
From the other hand, there are many physiological causes that may affect sexual health:
- Age Changes
- Arteriosclerosis. Genitals are also dependent on blood vessels function. Impotence may be a result of atherosclerosis.
- Tobacco smoking affects the body fat distribution, and is a serious factor for the development of atherosclerosis.
- Alcohol. An excessive consumption of alcohol affects sexuality, both directly through effects on the body and indirectly by the social consequences (the contact with other people and so on).
Various diseases can also affect sexual life
- Cardiovascular diseases: Cardiovascular problems, since responsible for proper blood circulation, are behind the greatest percentage of erectile dysfunction cases in males.
- Nerve Diseases: such as, multiple sclerosis or diseases occurred in the result of nerve damages, during which you could lose sensation in some part of the body. The nerves in the genitals may also be affected, with decreased sexual response to stimulation.
- Diabetes: Up to three fourths of diabetic males will experience some degree of erection problems during their lifetime.
- Diseases of the abdomen: for example, pelvic inflammatory disease.
- Cancer: cancer is a serious disease with both, mental and physical affects. Treatment of cancer (radiation, surgery, cytotoxic drugs) can affect sexual function negatively.
What can I do?
Do a simple test. Stimulate yourself and try some masturbation to see if you can induce ejaculation. If you have problems, you take steps.
When the medication you are prescribed to, causes ED and is indispensable for you, the consequences of not taking the drug might outweigh the side effects (ED) you get from it.
Don’t give up:
- Do whatever you can do to improve your condition. Think positively on your new life situation. There is much reading about how to live with sexual problems, about relationships and so on.
- Explore your sexuality. There are things like sense training, self-awareness exercises and more, you can work with. for all people
- Talk to your doctor.
What can the doctor do?
You doctor and/or pharmacist can tell you about possible side effects in a certain medication. It’s absolutely normal to ask, if there are any specific sexual problems associated with the medical treatment that you need to start with.
- Remember, it is not 100% that you get these side effects. Additionally, any side effect is typically over after a certain period of time.
- If the problem is caused by the drug, the doctor may offer a similar drug which does not produce the same effects for you.
- If you get painful and persistent erection, or priapism, contact your doctor quickly. The condition requires urgent treatment.
Your doctor can give you real consultations so that you and your partner can have an opportunity to discuss these problems and perhaps find some things you both can do to improve your sexual life.
- You can also refer to a specialist in the sphere of sexology.
- You can refer to actual marital therapy, in which both parties take part.

There is a number of factors it is good to be extra aware of, when you shop online. Especially, when it comes to buying medicines. The following tips make it a little easier to stay attentive when dealing through e-commerce.
Choose whom you deal with
If you want to buy medicine on the Internet, find a trusted dealer. It is important to find a reputable and reliable pharmacy, while it is not always easy. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself when you are evaluating an e-store:
- Who is behind the website, its information, products and services offered?
- Does the website contain advertisements which contradict the information placed on it?
- When was the site last updated?
Additionally, there are some characteristics that should get your alarm bells to ring:
- The promises of health and healing are too good to be true.
- There is a long list of various diseases that the medicine can cure.
- The medicine can only be purchased from that certain dealer and/or only for a limited period.
Require information on medicine
Being a customer you are entitled to get full, authentic and professional information about the medicine you are considering to buy. If you cannot get adequate information on the medication, you should find a more serious dealer.
The information, among other things, you should be aware of, is as following:
- drugs’s brand name
- active ingredients
- medicine’s indication
- contraindications and interactions (cases, in which the medication should not be used, for example, during pregnancy or along with other medicines)
- dosage
- possible side effects
- manufacturer’s name and address
Buy only approved medicine
In USA and European countries, any drug, before it can appear on the shelves of pharmacies to be sold to consumers, is required by Law to be approved by health authorities. If you are unsure, whether the medicine you want to purchase, is approved, ask the dealer, and if the answer is yes, then ask, in which countries.
If the dealer does not know or does not want to provide the information on whether the medicine is approved, or will not say it, then there is something seriously wrong.
Can you get insurance cover?
If you buy medicine in USA or EU, you get subsidies through health insurance, and if you are associated with a private insurance system, perhaps, from there.
But if you buy drugs abroad, then you are not entitled to health insurance subsidies. Therefore, you must be prepared to pay the full price for drug.
Are you provided with patient’s information?
When you buy drugs in the US or any other English-speaking country, packaging and patient’s information are in English. These contain important information about your medicine. For example, efficacy and side effects, warnings, storage, special circumstances a patient should be aware of and so on.
When you buy drugs abroad, you should ensure that you get a patient’s information in a language you understand.
Beware of name confusion
In different countries drugs are typically sold under different brand names. Therefore, you cannot be sure what the package does contain, though two names sound almost identically.
If you are unsure about any particular medication, ask the dealer the about the indication of the medicine. Also ask your pharmacist or try to compare the ingredients with any medicine you know.
Avoid fake drugs
Everything can be counterfeited, including drugs. If you buy medicine online, you often do not know who you are dealing with. It is also difficult to see if the dealer is a subject to any control by the authorities of the country in which one is located.
This means that there is a risk that what you buy is not what you think you buy. At best, it’s just useless. At worst it is downright harm to the health.
Will you receive compensation if an accident occurs?
Any medicine is to prevent, alleviate or cure diseases. Nevertheless, it sometimes occurs that the drug causes damage to health. Therefore, some compensation for the damage can often help in the situation.
When you buy pills from a US/EU pharmacist or other licensed dealer, you are automatically covered by a compensation scheme for pharmaceutical injuries. If you buy medications abroad, you cannot just expect to be able to get compensation. Even the dealer’s promise of money back is not a compensation guaranty.
If you buy illegal?
You should be aware that there are rules limiting individuals to get medications sent from abroad, including medicines bought online.
Note that in EU it is illegal to receive medications that are purchased outside the EU and EEA countries.
