What is LEVITRA?

LEVITRA® is a prescription drug (see Levitra without prescription) used for treatment of impotence, erectile dysfunction (ED) in males. In 2003 Levitra became the second FDA-approved drug in the United States for this condition, after Viagra®. It was developed and marketed by Bayer AG. In some regions Levitra is sold under the brand name Vivanza.

For 2009-2011 period, Levitra has been the most prescribed and used ED medicine topping Viagra and Cialis.

Vardenafil hydrochloride, an active ingredient in the erectile dysfunction pill, is a phosphodiesterase type V inhibitor. It intensifies inflow of blood into corpus cavernosum of the penis by blocking the degradative action of PDE5 on Cyclic guanosine monophosphate in the smooth muscle cells.

Light-oranged film-coated Levitra® tablets have round shape with '2.5', '5', '10' '20' (for 2.5/5/10/20 mg dosages, respectively) imprints on the top side, and two crosswise 'Bayer AG' imprints on the bottom side.

Levitra and Premature Ejaculation

Recent LEVITRA® researches show the drug is also helpful with controlling the ejaculation process and, therefore, prolonging duration of sexual intercourse.

Patients who took vardenafil (vs placebo) reported significantly (P<0.01) increased ejaculatory control (6±2 vs 16±2), improved overall sexual satisfaction (7±2 vs 15±1) and distress (4±1 vs 8±1) scores, respectively.

Important Drug Facts

• should be taken 60-120 minutes before coitus, with or without food, but fatty food should be avoided since high-fat meals cause slower distribution of drug's effect;
• opposed to Brand Viagra and Cialis, does not potentiate the hypotensive (low blood pressure) effects of alcohol.

Do not take Levitra if:

• you are currently prescribed to any nitrate-containing substances, or drugs (i.e. Norvasc, Lotrel), since nitrates may lead to hypotension. List of drugs on nitrates;
• you are currently prescribed to other PDE5 inhibitors (Viagra, Cialis);
• you are allergic to LEVITRA or any of its components (cellulose, microcrystalline, crospovidone, silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, ferric oxide yellow, ferric oxide red).

Before you take LEVITRA, consult with your health care provider about all medicines you are prescribed to, since vardenafil hcl may have drug interactions (for more information see Prescribing Information); any episodes of medical conditions you have or ever had:

• cardiovascular diseases, coronary disease, cardiac infarction, valvular defect, stroke, chest pain, heart failure, arrhythmia, tachycardia, angina, seizure, or any heart related problems;
• hypertension, hypotension;
• liver or kidney diseases;
• eye diseases and problems, loss of vision;
• ear and hearing problems;
• stomach ulcers;
• bleeding;
• deformed penis shape;
• blood diseases, cell anemia, multiple myeloma, or leukemia.

Does Levitra Have Side Effects?

Yes. Vardenafil hydrocloride might be associated with adverse reactions. The most common side effects with the drug which typically disappear after a few hours are

• headaches
• upset stomach, or dizziness
• heartburn
• indigestion
• flush
• stuffy or runny nose
• flu-like symptoms

Some adverse reactions are considered potentially dangerous. In case of emergence, contact your doctor immediately:

• erection that lasts longer than 4 hours or priapism (painful erections greater than 6 hours in duration);
• severe loss of vision, or blurred vision, or changes in color vision, or hearing problems and ringing in ears;
• swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs;
• hoarseness;
• difficulty breathing or swallowing;
• fainting;
• hives;
• rash.

How is Levitra Taken?

The drug is taken as needed. Take a single pill 60-120 minutes before sexual intercourse. The minimal period for the next intake is 24 hours. Original film-coated Levitra® tablets are available in four dosages: 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg.

Remember that if you split the tablet, it may not work at all.

In case of overdosing, contact your local poison control center or call 911.
